The short film program is set!

36 films compete in the European Short Film Competition

The selection has been made: the European Short Film Competition at the 19th Münster Film Festival, which takes place from September 16 to 26 at the Schloßtheater, offers a colorful mix of animated films, documentaries and short feature films from 13 different countries – from the Faroe Islands to Portugal.

Viewers will be able to see a total of 36 short films between two and 30 minutes in length at the Schloßtheater. The films are all from 2020/2021, are being shown in Münster for the first time and were submitted by film schools or independent filmmakers. The winner of the Filmwerkstatt Grand Prize, which will be determined by an international jury, will receive prize money of 3,000 euros, donated by Die Linse e.V..

In the audience award, viewers vote for their favorite, who wins prize money of 1,000 euros, donated by Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe.

Well over 500 short films from 27 European countries were submitted for the competition. The Corona pandemic was of course the subject of numerous films, but it is primarily interpersonal relationships and social issues that preoccupy the filmmakers. Many resort to hybrid narrative forms, interweaving narrative elements with documentary moments or animation – the genre of short film remains a field of experimentation and a playground for young filmmakers who explore their freedoms and provide audiences with new viewing experiences.

The 15-minute film “Just A Guy” by Shoko Hara, for example, is an animated documentary about the complicated relationship between several women and a convicted serial killer – which has already won numerous awards at film festivals around the world. But even classic material like romantic comedy is turned inside out: In “Girl Meets Boy” by Ferdinand Arthuber, “Tatort” commissioner Franziska Weisz and Carlo Ljubek make an anti-relationship pact and come closer in a surprising way. And the Italian contribution “God Dress You” oscillates between fiction and documentary in its portrait of an orthodox monk with an unorthodox passion for luxury and designer fashion.

The competition programs will run from September 19 to 24 at the Schloßtheater Münster. On the evening of September 25, the award winners will be chosen. The complete program of the Münster 2021 Film Festival will be published at the end of August.

The Münster Film Festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the City of Münster and the Cultural Foundation of the Sparkasse Münster.
