Focus NL

The country focus on films from the Netherlands, which is unique in Germany, is dedicated this year to two great directors from our neighboring country who could not be more different: Heddy Honigmann and Dick Maas.

Born in Lima, Peru, Honigmann has been considered one of the most important documentary filmmakers for several decades. Her works have won numerous awards, she was the second filmmaker to be honored with the “Living Legend Award” by the most important European documentary film festival IDFA in Amsterdam, and MoMA in New York dedicated a special exhibition of her work to her.

Dick Maas, on the other hand, has played a major role in shaping commercial genre cinema in the Netherlands since the 1980s. His films “De Lift”, “Flodder” and “Amsterdamned” broke all box office records at home and carried the director on this wave of success all the way to Hollywood. The long overdue documentary about the career of Dick Maas, however, does not conceal the dark sides that international fame brought with it.
